-EU Chief Elections Observer Describes October’s Polls
The chief observer of the European Union Election Observation Mission in Liberia, Ms. Maria Arena says that the October 10, 2017 presidential and representatives elections are a crucial test for the democratic process in Liberia.

Addressing a news conference Friday, September 22, 2017 at a local hotel in Monrovia, Ms. Arena said a peaceful transition from one democratic elected president to another is important not only to Liberia but would serve as an example for the region.
“The Presidential and House of Representatives elections schedule for 10 October 2017 are a crucial test for the democratic process in Liberia. A peaceful transition from one elected president to another is important not only to Liberia but would serve as an example for the region,” Ms. Arena stressed.
The EU Election Observation Mission to Liberia was deployed at the invitation of the Liberian government and arrived in the country September 1, 2017 with an advance team of analysts in Monrovia, thus, the mission would observe and assess the presidential and Representatives elections against national laws.
The mission has deployed 20 long-term observers throughout the different regions in Liberia, adding that they would observe and analyze the whole electoral process, including the legal framework, electoral administration, voter registrations, nominations, campaign and the conduct of the media among others
Ms. Arena, a Belgium and a member of the European Parliament, is the head of the EU mission as the chief observer and had already met different stakeholders including the National Elections Commission (NEC), the Supreme Court, civil society organizations and candidates in these elections.
“After several meetings in Monrovia, I can see a good will from all sides to conduct the upcoming elections according to international standards. Our long-term observers are following the electoral process in all 15 counties since last week, they met already various stakeholders and are doing comprehensive analyses in the region,” EU chief elections observer said.
Madam Arena disclosed that the EU observers would observe the pre-elections phase, during Election Day and would stay in the country until the completion of a comprehensive assessment of the electoral process and present recommendations for futures elections.
Arena disclosed that the EU observation team would stick to its mandate of non-inference and neutrality, adding that the mission is in the country to contribute with impartial and objective assessment to a democratic transition in Liberia.
However, she revealed that around Election Day, the EU would bring into the country additional 34 short-term observers who according to her would reinforce the EU Election Observation Mission.
