-As Runoff Set For December 26
Liberians, voters and non-voters at home and abroad along with partners who have been working assiduously to keep Liberia on the democratic trajectory might breathe a sigh of relief over National Elections Commission’s (NEC’s) announcement that the runoff election will be held on Tuesday, December 26.

The delays caused by the legal challenge against the outcome of the October 10 polls generated huge exasperation, anxiety and fear amongst Liberians because of the portended potentiality of constitutional crisis.

The Supreme Court of Liberia last Thursday lifted the “Stay Order” it had placed on the scheduled November 7 runoff in the wake of the legal challenge initiated by Liberty Party on allegations of frauds and irregularities.

The court ordered the NEC to set a date for the runoff between the ruling Unity Party and the Coalition for Democratic Change. The lifting followed the denial of the party’s demand for a rerun instead of runoff.

However, the Commission Tuesday announced December 6, 2017, for the runoff. Chairman Cllr. Jerome Korkoya made the announcement at a very compendious news conference, declaring open immediately political campaign.

“Based on the mandate of the Supreme Court of Liberia and the National Elections Commission, I am pleased to announce that the 2017 presidential runoff election will be conducted on Tuesday, December 26, 2017. Accordingly campaign for the runoff election is hereby declared open and close at 11:59 on Sunday, December 24, 2017,” Chairman Korkoya disclosed.

The NEC boss indicated that thought the NEC realize that this date is immediately after Christmas Day, but calls on all register voters to make this one sacrifice for the good of the country’s democracy, thus urging the two political parties to go about their campaign activities in a very peaceful manner.

At the Same time the NEC chairman revealed that a team of technical experts of the Economy Community of West African States (ECOWAS) that has already reviewed the commission’s Final Voters Roll (FRR) would be returning into the country today in order to provide any other technical support where necessary.

“I am also pleased to announce that the technical team of the Economy Community of West African States (ECOWAS) that reviewed our Final Voters Roll (FRR) will be returning to the country today to provide any technical assistance needed in the implementation of the order of the honorable Supreme Court,” Chairman Korkoya noted.

He assured the Liberian people and the two political parties involve into the runoff of implementing the orders of the Supreme Court to the fullest and provide update to the Liberian people, stakeholders and the parties regularly as the NEC goes about the conduct of a free, fair and transparent runoff election process.

It can be recalled that the Supreme Court of Liberia placed a stay order on the conduct of the November 7, 2017 runoff election following writ of prohibition filed by the Liberty Party, of Cllr. Charles Walker Brumskine.

The LP, through its legal team preyed the Supreme Court to place a stay order on the conduct of the runoff election on grounds that the results of the October 10 polls was marked by fraud, irregularities and violation of the constitution of Liberia and the elections laws.

This request was granted by the high court, a situation which delayed the hosting of the runoff election upon the handing down of the court’s ruling recently into the case.

Meanwhile, the court, in its ruling orders the NEC to properly cleanup the Final Voters Roll (FRR) and distributes same to all election magistrates and polling places across the country before the conduct of the runoff among others.
