Though a woman has been sitting at the helm of power for the past eleven years, Liberian women are decisively not relenting in their struggle to still gain substantial political space and leverage in post–conflict governance of the country.

WOMEN DECISIVE 9x6As they have been demonstrating over the past years for identity and voice, the women of Liberia Tuesday converged in their numbers for the launch of the Liberia Women’s Policy Platform 2017.
Launched ahead of the poll on October 10, the policy platform serves as a focal point for women activists, candidates and voters, especially in the October 10, 2017 polls and even beyond.
The Capitol Building event attended by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was launched by Montserrado County Senator, Geraldine Doe Sheriff. In remarks, Senator Doe Sheriff told the gathering of jubilant women that the document was created by women of Liberia from all works of life throughout the entire country in December of 2016 and the document seeks to address four cardinal plights of women.
“The Liberian women policy platform was created for and by Liberian women from across the country and from various social, political and economic backgrounds. The platform identifies policy recommendations and issues important to Liberia women and their families,” Sen. Doe-Sheriff stressed.
The former chairman of the Congress for Democratic Change elected twice as Montserrado County Senator said the four points in the document aim to address empowering women to face the economy, fighting for healthy families, bringing about safer communities and increasing women’s participation in political processes in the country.
“The document was a result of feedbacks received from community consultations in 10 counties, stakeholders outreach, and meeting with policy experts and more than 1,100 surveys completed by women across the country,” she emphasized.
“More than 200 women came together to review and adopt this policy document and was onward presented to 11 women’s organizations who had worked together to identify policy recommendations and issues important to Liberian women and their families.”
Also, President Sirleaf who has inspired women into leadership recalled women’s role in 2005 and 2011, saying “the women of Liberia decided that it was their time and they rallied around me in making sure that I became President of the country.”
Pres. Sirleaf noted that implementing the policy platform of the women requires hard work and the commitment of every woman across the 15 counties and not just those in attendance at the program.
“Now, you are saying something different, close the gap; to close the gap, to implement that policy it takes work and commitment on the part of every woman out there, in every county, village, sub-section and every party. We have to be Jehovah Witnesses here, we have to go from door to door to select the candidates we want to win and we have to go into the communities and work with them,” President told the women.
The Liberian leader stated that now that she is not contesting, she has sufficient time in her favor to work with the women in order to ensure that this policy is implemented. “We want to examine those women who are running and those who are already there but trying to re-enter and see what they have done in the communities.”
President Sirleaf noted that she believes by working with those women who have the potential she will ensure that they be elected in the October polls, they are going to implement the document on behalf of the fellow women.
Meanwhile, the Liberian President lauded the women and assured them of her unflinching support in the implementation of the women’s policy platform 2017.
