Vice president and standard-bearer of the Unity Party, Joseph Boakai last evening confirmed long-held beliefs and speculations that inundated the political field by naming House Speaker Emmanuel Nuquay as his running mate in October’s poll.

It was a decision that needed sober reflection and cogitation, said VP Boakai in announcing his running mate who he praised as one of the best youthful Liberians burning with the energy to work for the growth of the country.

A 48-year-old son of Margibi County, his preferment has ended the glee and anxiety once harbored by some citizens of vote-rich Nimba County that one of their sons would have been.
Several names including Representative Matenokay Tingban, Senator Thomas Grupee, Edith Gongloe-Weh all of Nimba County, former Senate Pro-Tempore Gbehzongar Findley of Grand Bassa County, Cllr. Negbalee Warner, former Public Works Minister, Samuel Kofi Woods, former Finance Minister Antoinette Sayeh, reigned and filled the air in the buildup the announcement yesterday at the UP’s Congo Town headquarters amid cheers from elated partisans.
VP Boakai said his choice for running mate has shown strong commitment to the cause of Liberia and is as clean as he (Boakai) is. In his acceptance speech, Nuquay lauded the people of Margibi County and President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for the support.

He recounted his days at the national legislature acknowledging that he came from nowhere. As chairman on Ways, Means, Finance and Development Planning committee at the House of Representatives, Emmanuel Nuquay rose to fame when he won on a white ballot when Speaker J. Alex Tyler was removed as a result of an alleged bribery.
