Security Threat 9x6The manner in which the students entered the Building amid the presence of security officers raised eyebrows and seen as a signal of the level of threat or risk there.
Sergeant-At-Arm, General Martin Johnson, drew attention to the situation, and alarmed the National Legislature is vulnerable than parliaments in countries he has traveled.
Gen. Johnson told legislative reporters Thursday that due to the vulnerability of the building, there is a need for the leadership to augment the security officers for 24 hours service.
According to him, he has written numerous communications to the leadership of the Liberia National Police to beef up the security at the building, but no answer. The students bypassed the security officers in an attemptto enter the joint chambers where the 2017/2018 National Budget hearing was taking place. Nimba County University Students Association (NUSA) sometimes ago stormed the Capitol Building to demandtheir lawmakers make available scholarship fees.

There was another episode when students of the University made their way in the rotunda of the building, chanting revolutionary songs. General Johnson said such situation coupled with serious security threats across the world is scaring.

“All over the world, parliament buildings and government institutions have been targets for terrorists and looking at terrorisms globally, Liberia is of no exception. Terrorism is crimping on us in West Africa and there is a need for us to do something now,” he said.

The senior law enforcement officer at the building is calling on the Inspector General of the Liberia National Police to ensure that armed police officers are assigned at the various entrances of the National Legislature.

He maintained that with the role of the national legislature in the country, there is a need because if anything happens, the entire country will be paralyzed. “You can’t find a single police officer after 4pm and they must be here 24 hours. I sound very frustrated because it is scaring. The security of the lawmakers is paramount,” he added.

Over the years, several lawmakers have alarmed over the vulnerability of the building calling for the installation of security cameras and deploying more security officers.
