The 13th Judicial Circuit Court Judge in Margibi County, Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay Sr. has sentenced a man for three years in prison for attacking a police officer. In his final ruling, the judge noted that defendant Abraham Zero is a resident of Camp One in Harbel, Firestone.

He was indicted on April 4, 2107 for the crime of criminal attempt to commit murder and aggravated assault. On May 3, 2107, the case was called for hearing and the prosecution which is the Government of Liberia and the plaintiff in the case paraded three witnesses.

The first witness, Nathan G. Marshall, testified during the trial that on November 16, 2016 they were on normal duty patrolling Harbel Market when some marketers complained to them that there was a gentleman in the market spinning a sharp instrument which could possibly injure another person.

Officer Marshall said that upon hearing the complaint, they proceeded to Abraham Zero, and when he talked to him (Zero), he stood up and looked right in his face and pretended that he was bending down to pick up something, but instead took up a knife and stabbed police officer Marshal in his stomach.

However, the defense counsel prayed the court to present their theory which was granted and the defense informed the court that indeed the act for which the defendant was charged was committed, but was committed by mistake and not intentional.
Contrary to the defense`s theory, the defendant was asked whether his statement of confession at the police admitted into evidence was his true statement, which he answered yes.
When he was further asked why he ran to Camp #1 from the crime scene, he said he simply went to drink water to his house.
During argument the defense waives argument and prayed the court to render justice with mercy. Following the prosecution and argument the trial jury retired to their room of deliberation and returned a unanimous verdict of guilty against the defendant.
In the judge`s ruling, he cited the case Isaac Toe appellant versus Republic of Liberia, 30llr page 491, syllable 7, the Supreme Court of Liberia said “the uncorroborated evidence of an accused is insufficient to establish his innocence, especially where the evidence against him is clear and convincing”, the ruling added.
Predicated upon that the judge ruled that “wherefore and in view of the foregoing, the unanimous verdict of the trial jury is hereby confirmed and affirmed defendant Abraham Zero is hereby adjudged guilty and is hereby sentenced to imprisonment for a period of three years effective as of the date of the judgment”, the judge ruled.
